Which schedule is right for us?
There's no universally "best" custody schedule — the right one depends on the kids' ages, how close the two homes are, and how each parent's work schedule lines up. A few rules of thumb parents and mediators often use:
- Younger kids (under about 5) tend to do better with shorter stretches between seeing each parent — 2-2-3 or 2-2-5-5 rather than a full week apart.
- School-age kids can usually manage week-on/week-off or 3-4-4-3, especially once routines (backpack, homework, activities) are consistent across both homes.
- Long distances between homes favor fewer, longer blocks — week-on/week-off or 3-4-4-3 over 2-2-3, simply because there are fewer transitions to manage.
- One parent as the primary residence (for school-district or stability reasons) usually means every-other-weekend plus a weekday evening, rather than a 50/50 split.
None of this is a substitute for legal advice — a mediator, co-parenting counselor, or family law attorney can weigh in on what a court in your area is likely to find reasonable for your specific situation.
